Does my business need a license?

A business license is required to engage in business in the City of Redmond.  If your commercial or in-home business will be located inside the city limits, you will need a City of Redmond business license.  View a City of Redmond map (this interactive mapping tool lets you search for your address, or see an ordinary street map) to determine if your business is located in the city limits. If your place of business is not located within the city limits, but you or your agents will be physically coming into the city to conduct business or to call on clients, you will also need a Redmond business license.  In addition, those who earn money without physical presence, by providing services such as telecommunications or by receiving rents, need a City of Redmond business license.

Refer to the list of exempt businesses if you are not sure whether your business requires a business license.

License Renewal

All business licenses are valid from January 1 through December 31 of the year issued and must be renewed by February 15 of each year.  Renewals are sent by mail in mid-December to all active businesses.  If you have not received your renewal paperwork by the first week in January, contact the Business License Office at 425-556-2193 or via email at businesslicense@redmond.gov.

Payment of your renewal license must be made on or before February 15th or late fees are assessed.  The license will not be considered valid until all late fees are paid.  Failure to receive the renewal notice does not exempt the business owner from the responsibility of obtaining a license.

If you are planning to sell or close your business, you must notify the City in writing in order to remove your business from active city records.  Send your notice of closing or sale of the business by fax (425) 556-2400 or via email at businesslicense@redmond.gov.  Nonpayment of the license renewal fee does not automatically close your business license account.

Business License Fees
Underline Image

City of Redmond Business License Fees are based on the total number of employee hours worked in Redmond in the previous calendar year.  Employers without a full year history would need to estimate the number of employee hours that will be worked in the current calendar year or the number of full-time equivalent employees that will work in the current calendar year to determine the fee owed.

The minimum fee for any license is $92, which covers up to 1,920 hours worked in Redmond.  In addition to the annual employee hours reported to Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, you must include employee hours for sole proprietors, owners, managers, partners, and any officers, agents, family members working at the business or personal representatives acting in a fiduciary capacity.

Annual employee hours may be calculated based on the sum of employee hours on the four quarterly reports submitted to Washington State Department of Labor and Industries for the previous year.  It will be the responsibility of the employer to determine the number of hours worked within the city from these reports.  The work figure used by L&I is 1,920 hours per year for a full-time employee.  Multiply the total number of employee hours worked in Redmond by $0.047917 to determine the total amount due.

The license fee may also be calculated by multiplying the number of full-time equivalent employees that worked in Redmond by $92.  The number of employees shall be based on the sum of the employees in the four quarterly reports submitted to Washington State's Department of Labor and Industries for the previous year divided by four.
