Green Redmond Last Saturday Series Westside Park
July 21, 2013 Jeri Rowe-Curtis

Redmond, WA
—April through October, the Green Redmond Partnership hosts volunteer work events on the Last Saturday of the month. These regularly scheduled work parties are in addition to multiple work events completed by school groups, individuals, and dedicated Forest Stewards. July’s event, scheduled for the 27th of July, from 9am – Noon, will be held at Westside Park.

In 1968, 6.4 acres was acquired for the development of Westside Park, a neighborhood park consisting of a small playground and open grass area. Bridle Crest Trail passed through the property, providing part of the connection between Bridle Crest State Park and the Sammamish Valley. In 2003 King County transferred the wooded ravine, and trail corridor to the City of Redmond increasing the size of the park to just over 17 acres. The wooded ravine and trail corridor is the area of emphasis for the work being completed by the dedicated Forest Stewards of the Green Redmond Partnership.

Work began at Westside Park when the Green Redmond Partnership initially formed in 2008. When the original Forest Stewards moved out of the area, they were successful at recruiting active volunteers to complete the Forest Steward training and assume the responsibility of caring for this piece of forested parkland.

Today, Glenn Eades and Gary Smith, work together to lead volunteers in removing non-native, invasive plants and planting native trees and shrubs. Both Glenn and Gary have a history of civic engagement. Both are past Commissioners of the Parks and Trails Commission and both have varying interests in outdoor activities. When asked about working with volunteers, Glenn commented on “their enthusiasm and readiness to put in a few hours hard work”. Gary’s suggestion to anyone interested in becoming a Forest Steward is: “Find a park that you really like and care about, and then follow your curiosity”. Join them on Saturday, July 27 at 9am-Noon and learn more about the forested area of Westside Park.

Westside Park is located at 5810 156th Avenue NE. Gloves and tools are provided. To sign up, get more information about the Green Redmond Partnership, or learn of other volunteer opportunities, visit
