Redmond’s Citizen Academy - Wrapping Up on Monday, March 26, 2012 with Discussion of Housing

Redmond Citizen Academy

Helping build a foundation for Redmond’s FUTURE and
its future LEADERS

Have you ever considered how Redmond evolved to be the vibrant City of today? Or, how it may continue to change over time? What does it take to successfully manage a City of over 55,000 residents? And, where does my drinking water originate and then flow to when it leaves my home? How are improvements to sidewalks and other projects scheduled?

During the 2011 series, 24 community members joined City staff to learn about the many aspects of Redmond government and the role it serves in your day-to-day activities. The Redmond Citizen Academy is a great way for those who live, work, and own property throughout Redmond to prepare for participating in local government or simply to learn about the day-to-day activities that make Redmond a vibrant City for all.

Participants of the 2011 series said:

  • I feel much more aware of what is going on in my community.  I would highly recommend it to all who are interested.
  • Provides true appreciation for all the functions and services provided by the City.

The Citizen Academy provides an opportunity to become familiar with the science and technology, the projects and programs, and the possible future innovations regarding Redmond’s government operations. Comprised of six sessions, Citizen Academy meetings includes a short presentation by staff, a question & answer portion, and an opportunity for participants to identify major points for future consideration during neighborhood plan updates.

Some citizens take advantage of this opportunity to gain knowledge useful for future leadership positions with Redmond’s committees, boards, commissions, and City Council. Some attend in preparation for joining a Citizen Advisory Committee focused on their respective neighborhood plan update. And others simply want to better understand City operations and how they relate to day-to-day activities.
