Farrel-McWhirter Preschool

Farrel-McWhirter Preschool
Quality Preschool Education for your child…

Now run by our partners at Nature Vision!

Come play in the dirt, explore the creek, plant a garden, and create art at Farrel-McWhirter Preschool! Our mission is to build an engaging environment where children can learn math, science, language, and literacy concepts through play in natural surroundings. Partly indoors and out, we give children an opportunity to engage their heads, hands, and hearts and to provide connections to our larger community that will last a lifetime. The curriculum will address the needs of the whole child, creating fertile ground for a life-long love of learning, as well as preparing students for their elementary school careers.

We are pleased to announce that our school program is now being guided by the highly qualified early childhood education team from Nature Vision. Providing exceptional children’s programming throughout the region, as a non-profit environmental education organization Nature Vision acknowledges the long standing success and loyal respect that the past preschool program has garnered within the Redmond Community. It is their mission to provide a seamless transition for students, maintaining the high quality preschool program families have come to expect. Let us introduce our new team partners:

Equipped with a Master’s in Education and certified in Early Childhood Education Leadership, Sheila Dearden will be our new Preschool Director. A former LWSD kindergarten teacher, Sheila’s creative curriculum will utilize all the environments at the park to scaffold learning in language, math, science, art, music, movement, and environmental education. Children will gain independence and self-esteem in compassionate surroundings, which will foster a sense of wonder and a sense of place.

Sheila will be assisted by Clay Heilman, who has extensive background in working with children, especially in guiding them outdoors. Clay is a former park manager, who lived at Farrel-McWhirter Park, and is passionate about connecting students with nature. Clay is also a Certified Interpretive Guide, trained in effective communication/presentation in outdoor settings for all ages. A third highly qualified Nature Vision staff member is expected to join the team this fall.

We are excited about this new evolution of our program and look forward to welcoming your family into our happy learning community at Farrel-McWhirter Park!

Creative Play - #51804
A diversity of nature art genres will be the context for this creative preschool experience. Imagine creating a play to act out a nature story, dancing like a mayfly in the creek, singing a bird song, planting a “hungry caterpillar” garden, or working together to craft a child-designed “salmon stream” on the lawn of our school. A sense of wonder shapes our curriculum to foster creativity, critical thinking skills, and compassion in children. Students may not even realize that they will also be learning literacy, numeracy, and science! Child must be age 3 before the first day of school.

These are just some of the adventures in store for us in this class. If your child learns best by doing or would benefit from more experiential learning, this class is designed for them! The adventures will be the context for learning math, science, and language skills. The park‘s outdoor classroom is perfect to help children develop initiative, healthy risk-assessment strategies, and leadership skills. Child must be 3 ½ before the first day of school.

Pre-K Discoveries - #51820
Exploring cycles, patterns, and changes in nature, this class will create a rich learning environment to foster the whole child. Preschool years are an age of curiosity and wonder. What better place to cultivate a lifetime love of learning than Farrel-McWhirter Park? This class will lay the foundations for healthy cognitive, social, and emotional development; ensuring children are well-prepared for Kindergarten. Through investigation, inquiry, guided and self-directed play, within a language and experientially-rich environment, we will establish important building blocks for learning. Reflecting the unique farm and nature park setting, we will create a “four H” learning environment…an education for the head, hands, heart, and home. Child must be age 4 before the first day of school.
